Collection: Nike Air Max Plus Sneakers
First released in 1998, the Nike Air Max Plus sneaker offered a technical update on Nike’s revolutionary Max Air midsole, and has remained a sneaker staple for over two decades. Staying true to the original silhouette, the modern Air Max Plus sits on top of the Swoosh brand’s legendary ‘Tuned’ Air cushioning, with all the energetic design lines that made the ’98 style a hit with sneakerheads.
Nike’s Air-Sole unit has seen some key upgrades since its release in ’78. In ’87, the Air Max 1 became the first Nike sneaker to showcase a visible Air cushion, becoming a key turning point in the brand’s design history. Then, in ’98, the Air Max Plus dropped with a cushioning system that ‘Tuned’ Air-Sole units to specific parts of the foot, offering more support and stability for runners.
Taking inspiration from wind-swept beachscapes, Sean McDowell designed the Air Max Plus in a dreamy sunset colourway, complete with wavy design lines and a midfoot shank that takes its shape from a whale’s tail. The upper is constructed of mesh and a TPU welded overlay, sitting atop the iconic Air midsole and finished off with a Tn Air on the heel counter.
Dozens of new colourways and iterations have seen the Nike Air Max Plus stay in the minds of sneakerhead’s since its release, creating a cult classic that’s set to be a part of everyone’s rotation for years to come. For the sneaker’s 20th birthday in 2018, Nike dropped a host of new Air Max Plus colourways, and 2019 has similarly seen a collection of minimal, deconstructed styles to keep the shoe up-to-the-minute.
