Hitting the shelves back in 1990, the Nike Air Jordan 5 became an instant classic. As with most cops in the Air Jordan lineage, the silhouette was crafted by iconic Nike designer Tinker Hatfield. After watching MJ dominate the court in his 1989-90 season – where the player went on to set his points-per-game personal record – Hatfield likened Jordan’s ferocious style to a Mustang fighter plane from World War II. This fighter jet went on to be Hatfield’s inspiration for the Air Jordan V, which incorporates shark-tooth shapes on the midsole in a nod to the popular WWII nose art.

The sneaker was first introduced to the world by Mars Blackmon, capturing the imagination of sneaker fans everywhere. Designed with a reflective 3M tongue and mesh netting, the Nike Air Jordan 5 was the most innovative Jordan sneaker yet. A translucent outsole boasted the shoe’s visible Air unit, while a new lace lock system worked to keep players’ feet firmly in place.

The Nike Air Jordan V originally dropped in three now-iconic colourways: Grape, Metallic and Fire Red. First retroed in 2000, on the sneaker’s 10th anniversary, the Jordan brand has released over 40 different retro styles, including OG colourways, new styles and low-top versions. Although the OG styles featured ‘Nike Air’ on the heel, diehard AJ fans will spot an updated Jumpman logo adorning the newest releases.
