Inspired by one of the biggest names in basketball history, the Nike Air Jordan was the first silhouette to be designed for a single athlete. Although they started life on the feet of a court icon, the Air Jordan quickly became a cult classic, donned by rappers, athletes and celebrities alike. Over 30 years later, the hype for Air Jordan sneakers shows no sign of slowing down, with sneakerheads worldwide lining up for each new iteration.
The Nike Air Jordan first launched as a basketball high-top back in 1985, dropping in a vibrant black and red colourway. Although they were designed for the court, the sneakers generated a lot of controversy, and were immediately banned by the NBA. Violating the league’s uniform policy, a then-22-year-old Michael Jordan earned himself a warning letter and a $5000 fine every time he wore them. Nike decided to pay each fine Jordan received, and it’s this act of rebellion that catapulted the Air Jordans into the limelight.
Fast forward three decades and the Air Jordan has seen hundreds upon hundreds of reinventions. From the OG Air Jordan 1 to iconic collaborations with the likes of Off-White and Patta, this old-school silhouette has become a symbol of creative potential. And with new versions launching every year, the Air Jordan range is growing all the time, now encompassing a collection of cutting-edge Air Jordan apparel.
