Nike was originally founded as Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964, when University of Oregon track athlete Phil Knight and his coach started selling Japanese shoes out of the back of Knight’s car. By 1971, BRS had started designing their own range of footwear, complete with the iconic Swoosh logo that makes Nike so instantly recognisable today. That same year, the company rebranded as Nike, Inc. In less than a decade after the release of their first shoe, Nike attained 50% of the market share in the US performance footwear market.

After Nike sneakers gained international fame, the brand expanded to design athletic apparel, with iconic pieces like Nike tracksuits and shell suits becoming urban fashion staples. The brand remains a symbol of streetwear culture, dominating both athletic shops and high-street fashion stores.
