This December, Vault by Vans taps multifaceted artist, Cali Dewitt to release a footwear and apparel collection featuring his original artwork. The Los Angeles based visual artist explores a variety of cultural concerns, using fashion and art to communicate his outlook and start important conversations. The seven-piece head-to-toe assortment questions the uncertainty of the world thought-provoking photoreal graphics and quotes, foreshadowing the forlorn future.
Dewitt’s body of work spans several decades and mediums including zines, prints, photographs, music videos and apparel and often pairs provocative imagery culled from the deep confines of the internet with wordplays lifted from headlines, spam mail, advertising and mundane phrases. The artist grew up in the San Fernando Valley since the age of three and has fond memories of skating and picking up a new pair of Vans from the local Topanga Canyon store in the late ‘70s. When asked about his creative approach, Dewitt noted his process for footwear and apparel is no different than his approach for a flyer, canvas or book. Dewitt envisioned the brand’s iconic silhouettes as blank pages. For his debut Vault by Vans collection, Dewitt centered his inspiration around the “insufferable, self-obsessed egos of mankind” and is meant to capture the “endless spiral of stupidity, the death of privacy and the funeral for the mystery that lies ahead.”
The Vault by Vans x Cali Dewitt Footwear and apparel collection is available to buy ONLINE now via the button below.
The Vault by Vans footwear lineup includes five silhouettes – the Sk8-HI VLT LX, Era VLT LX, Chukka Boot VLT LX, Old Skool VLT LX and the Classic Slip-On VLT LX - that each depict a repeated earth and coffin pattern across the premium cotton canvas uppers. Each of the footwear models include opposing words embroidered along the collars and heel of each model to sensationalize the notion of uncertainty. The Earth and Coffin design was inspired by “the many people in power in the world who value wealth and power over humanity and nature,” said Dewitt. “If unchecked, the greediness of the few will be the end of all.” The collection is complemented with a three-piece apparel assortment including a Vault by Vans pullover, short sleeve and sweat pant that features “GLOBAL WARNING” embroidered and coffin graphics
