Showcasing Vans’ commitment to art and outsider culture at large, Vans has partnered with iconic photographer, Jim Goldberg, on a custom collection of footwear, clothing and accessories. Created to celebrate his influential book Raised by Wolves (1995), which documents the lives of teenage runaways living on the streets of San Francisco and Los Angeles, the capsule collection features three OG Vans styles adorned with key elements from the book.
Jim Goldberg is an American artist and photographer, whose work reflects long-term, in-depth collaborations with neglected, ignored or otherwise outside the mainstream populations. Bay Area-based Goldberg has received several awards recognizing his work, including three National Endowment of the Arts Fellowships in Photography, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Henri Cartier-Bresson Award and the Deutsche Borse Photography Prize. In addition, he is a Professor Emeritus at the California College of the Arts and has been a member of the Magnum Photos agency since 2002.
Raised by Wolves collages ten years of photographs, texts, films and installations to create a multilayered depiction of displaced and misunderstood youths in their pursuit of freedom. The photographs, made between 1985 and 1995, weave in and out of home movie stills, discarded belongings, drawings and diary entries from Goldberg’s subjects, effectively creating a scrapbook of the stark and unsparing reality of life on the street.
Highlights of the footwear capsule include an OG Old Skool LX in acid wash denim and OG Sk8-Hi LX in mattress colorway. Each draw direct connections to images repeated throughout Goldberg’s seminal body of work. Supporting these two is an additional black leather OG Sk8-Hi LX and two OG Classic Slip-On LX colorways featuring handwritten text on the sidewalls and printed uppers. As with all OG Vans Vault styles, each is based on the absolute OG original style, with hand-wrapped high foxing tape, original patterns and panels, original label artwork and elevated materials.
The collaboration is an opportunity to introduce an important and powerful body of work to a new audience and represents Vans’ commitment to art and the brand’s ability to use product as a canvas for artistic creative expression. “Subverting the power and visibility of big brands to give back to our communities is a major plus,” says Goldberg. “Also, I’ve been wearing Vans forever so being able to work with them to create a wearable line has been incredibly rewarding for me and for the project.”
The Vault By Vans x Jim Goldberg collection launched at HANON via an ONLINE raffle.
