Vans Vault x Copson

This collaboration emerged as a natural fit, with both brands born out of the essence of skateboarding. Playing in the counter-cultural realms, both Vans and Copson share a sense of freedom in their DNA. The Vans playground is California, USA and Copson’s Calabria, Italy - the sunshine states of both nations. Beyond having sunshine in common, these two spaces share a much deeper mutual feeling.

The Californian droughts of the 1970s were the harmonious breeding ground for the birth of bowl skating. Surfers took to the empty swimming pools to find pleasure in trying something new. Vans gifted these ‘land surfers’ their shoes and became firmly and naturally aligned with this movement. It is an era of skateboarding that has forever inspired Copson.

Nodding to this shared history is the recently improved shape of the silhouettes, made to match the original shoes beloved by this generation. Original design, original quality, and reworked for Vault by Vans this season to replicate the vintage shapes of the past. Details include sticky outsole rubber and sidewall sealing wipe to mimic those found on the original Vans from the 70s’.
In understated Copson style, the designs are clean and timeless; with subtle elevated choices of fabrics and finishes throughout. The Epoch is recreated with Italian suedette, the Slip-on features a favourite print from the Vans archives, and the Authentic is updated with suede details and brass eyelets.

With mandatory isolation becoming the norm over the last months, the original campaign had to evolve into a new reality. Copson photographer and film director Romano Pizzichini turned the lens onto himself with a ‘self-portrait’ series shot at home in London.

With the sentiment ‘What's your fantasy? this project plays homage to the beauty and magic that can be born from the new and unfamiliar, the great unknown. An optimistic nod to the transformational changes that are going on around us in the world today.
