The PUMA Clyde is somewhat of an unsung hero in the world of trainers, but to those in the know the shoes importance can't be understated. This year sees the bona-fide legend celebrate 50 years of relevance and remaining on the feet of discerning sneaker enthusiasts the world over.
Introduced in 1973 as Walt “Clyde” Frazier's signature basketball shoe, the design really opened the door for what has become almost second nature in the world of sports with athlete endorsed signature shoes and brands working with athletes to produce footwear geared around their needs & wishes the norm. At the time in 1973 PUMA's Clyde heralded some of the brands latest performance based thinking of the era. Created from the ground up following Walt “Clyde” Frazier's request for some custom PUMA Suede's it put his needs on the court at it's core. Given the shoes impact on what would become 'sneaker culture' it's easy to lose sight that the shoe initially started out as a tool to enhance a players game on court, with "extra support everywhere, foam padding, arch support and an Achilles ten-don pad".
Away from the court is what's kept the name relevant and cemented its place among popular culture. A shoe of choice in the burgeoning B-boy scene in New York, with the shoe appearing on foot and in the background with each landmark cultural event occurring in the late 20th century helping birth what we recognize as 'Street culture' for want of a better phrase. The shoes been a unintentional & very much intentional canvas over the years as decades worth of artists, designers, stores & customizers have sought to make the shoe their own. The list of collabs that PUMA have embarked on starring the Clyde reads as a veritable who's who of this world.
Which rather neatly leads us on to PUMA raising a glass for the Clyde's 50th. Arriving in a pack of three PUMA present an OG celebration of the Clyde - resplendent in rich suede uppers contrasted by brilliant white leather overlays. Gold foil branding appears as per the originals as well as PUMA's signature woven label stitched to each tongue.
