Nike Mayfly

First released in 2003 the original Nike Mayfly shared more than just it’s name with the insect. Much like it’s namesake who are known to live for a day or two the original runners were designed to last 60 miles (or 100km’s) and actually became lighter on your feet as the run goes on.

The Nike Mayfly was inspired by the ideal set forth by Nike founder Bill Bowerman, who envisioned a shoe that would provide enough support for a runner during a race, but would fall apart once that runner crossed the finish line. Weighing only 135g they offered optimum support and cushioning whilst being stripped down to the bare athletic essentials. In long distance running for every extra 100g that an athlete has to carry on his feet, he needs approximately 1% more energy to perform.

An interesting fact about the original design of these was that they initially used a Fed Ex packaging material on the base of the shoe. Whilst it wasn’t very breathable, the wrapping material did hold it’s own against rips and even had waterproof properties but eventually they discovered a more ventilated material.

Fortunately these lifestyle versions don’t share the same self-destructive tendencies as the original release. The Mayfly has a minimal design and is made from a nylon and suede mix, sat upon a Phylon midsole. The cosmetic detail comes in the form of a stylised version of the Mayfly wing design and come in three colourways: black, university red or racer blue.
