Originally released in 1999, the Air Max Tailwind IV returns to mark 20 years since it first showed up on the scene. Its namesake released in 1979, the Air Tailwind was the first shoe to ever feature Nike’s iconic Air cushioning. From the innovative Nike Air unit to the speed-driven design, the Air Tailwind marked the start of a new generation of athletic footwear. The Tailwind lineage has lived on beyond its 1979 introduction with new iterations and retro releases in the years since.
Initially, the ‘Air Max Tailwind IV’ designs were much more athletic but developed over time with insights from the Air Max Plus and the Air Max 97. The original 1999 Air Max Tailwind IV utilized a similar Air Max unit as the Air Max Plus—without the “Tuned Air” Pillars.
Helping create a unique design with just the right hint of familiarity, the Air Max Tailwind IV’s TPU elements and colour fading were inspired by the classic Air Max Plus. Highlighting the Air Max cushioning, the Air Max Tailwind IV also features a similar element-inspired logo that was first seen the prior year on the Air Max Plus.
Two decades later, Nike bring back the Air Max Tailwind IV in original tones. The Tailwind IV launches at HANON on Thursday the 25th of April.
