Fifteen years on from our first collaboration with New Balance, this September we release our 19th collaboration together. Paying homage to our history with New Balance, we present the HANON x New Balance 577 ‘Flimby Legend’.
In the mid 80’s we started skateboarding and became obsessed by it and everything associated with it. Then in 1990 we opened the shop and sold a mix of skateboards and streetwear. By around ‘92, we started travelling to the US and would bring back trainers (sneakers) that we couldn't buy at home. There were none of the sneaker stores that we see today and the traditional sports shops were disappearing. In the 90’s, it was either ‘new tech’, or for some reason a lot of white leather, and the logos on shoes were getting smaller. We wanted what we called ‘old school sneakers’ - classic 70’s and 80’s styles with bold branding.
Most of the stuff we now take for granted had stopped being produced back then so all of the shoes we bought from the US were deadstock. As the mid 90’s came around, we were trying to make in-roads with sports brands to stock their footwear legitimately as classic models were now slowly starting to reappear. Around this time, New Balance was the first to recognise us an official stockist.
There was always something about New Balance footwear. A class above and the alternative to everything else. There was no celebrity noise, just really good product, understated, quietly doing it’s own thing. Back then it wasn’t all that easy to get hold of other than at performance running stores, and the styles we wanted were a bit off the radar. We sold three models; 577, 576 and 574. From memory, regardless of demand the 577 was always in the line and a Made in England version at the now legendary Flimby Factory. Everything from shape to leathers and suedes down to the hangtags, a Flimby Made New Balance just had that premium feel.
Taking a similar approach to our M1500 ‘Chosen Few’, we wanted our latest collaboration to be quintessential Flimby. To have the look and feel of a back catalogue shoe. Something that we missed back then or a sample that didn’t quite make it. We wanted the shoe to have that classic New Balance DNA of grey and navy and to capture the spirit of a Flimby Made shoe.
The ‘Flimby Legend’ edition of the M577 features an upper which is executed in a mix of premium grey, marine, cobalt blue, and navy suede, and is offset with white leather around the collar and heel tab. Our M577 is finished off with a punch-perfed vamp, cobalt blue embroidered details on the tongue and heel tab, and is sat atop a cream midsole and gum outsole.
