The 1989-90 season, it was clear to everyone that Michael Jordan is at the height of his powers. Setting a points per game personal record, he drained 69 points against Cleveland. He hit 92 three-pointers, compared to only 68 in all prior seasons combined. Every aspect of Jordan’s game was flawless, but it was his dogfight-like flight that separated him from every other player on the planet.
Tinker Hatfield took inspiration from Jordan’s biting style, likening it to an American WWII fighter plane. He designed the Air Jordan V with shark-tooth shapes on the midsole, then paired them with a clear outsole, the shoe a imbued a ferocity reminiscent of its relentless muse.
This ‘Laney’ rendition builds on the Emsley A. Laney High School inspiration first introduced in 2001’s White/Blue/Yellow edition that saw a reissue in 2013. Most noticeably this time around the white leather upper is swapped out for a rich, deep blue nubuck. Details include a chenille embroidered Jumpman on the reflective tongue, Jordan’s iconic ‘23’ squad number stitched on the heel and grey speckle effect on the midsole.
