This May, for the first time, we take our partnership with artisan shoemakers Padmore & Barnes to the next level, as we join forces with London-based Anglozine to present a collaborative take on the Higgins leisure shoe.
This collaboration with Padmore & Barnes draws its inspiration from Anglozine’s seasonal collection and a shared love of jazz records, cinema, and an enduring appreciation for the sense of style and design in the mid-20th century.
Originally released as a boat-shoe inspired silhouette in 1978, the Higgins is a lesser-known model from the Padmore & Barnes family but is instantly recognisable by their signature style. Much like the P204 and M387 range, the shoe has a moccasin type construction with a refined and understated profile.
As a limited edition of 60 pairs, the M244 arrives in a smooth sand suede upper, with perforations applied to the vamp, and a vibrant orange suede contrasts at the rear. It comes complete with a lush leather lining, Anglozine flag label, and a bespoke leather insole with a triple branded logo lock-up applied via gold foil detailing. Additional features appear at the lacestay as the metal eyelets - a detail of the original shoe - are removed and the traditional crepe sole is substituted for a lightweight and durable TPR unit.
Each pair is then presented in Padmore’s signature shoe box with gold foil branding on the lid, branded tissue paper, two lace sets - one tan and one dark brown, a printed cotton dust bag, sticker set, and a hand numbered hang tag.
Established in 1934 and founded in Kilkenny, Ireland, Padmore & Barnes has a rich history in the art of fine shoemaking. Evoking an authenticity and gold standard which can only be achieved in the spirit of traditional shoemaking, Padmore’s footwear to this day is still imagined in Ireland, manufactured in Europe, and handcrafted by local artisans.

Celebrating its 70th birthday in 2019, for much of its life, The Blue Lamp has been a focal point and hub for Aberdeen’s Jazz & Folk music scene, as well as for many other genres, cultural events, and clubs. With a packed bill of events and one-off concerts happening year-round within the intimate candle lit main lounge, it remains an undoubted favourite in the Granite City. The Blue Lamp is a true folk bar, one with no pretences, a bar of the people, and sits quietly just on the edge of the city centre. A place where the lost can be found and for those who find it, a place to get lost in the music. There is no name above its door, only a solitary blue lamp.

One of the central inspirations to this seasons Anglozine collection is Jimmy Smith who truly made the Hammond Organ his own and became heralded with the sound produced from his masterfully playing of the keys. Credited and admired for his style that earned him a reputation of sounding like an ensemble by himself, a loud funky aura perpetuated his music, especially those up-tempo records. Smith turned a veritable buffet of references and ideas such as R&B, with a smattering of gospel influences and bebop sensibilities to create an uplifting distinctive sound that was contemporary in its approach when viewed through the prism of music production today.
Anglozine founder Reuben Billingham cites “The Cat by Jimmy Smith has been in my record box since the 1990's, it’s a must have and remains in my top 5 jazz albums of all time- not that I'm a jazz buff. Most British kids of a certain age will be more than aware of one of the tracks on the A side as it was a theme to politics programme the old folk would watch, namely The Money Programme. “
"On his last European trip, Jimmy Smith met French actor Alain Delon. Jimmy had written and dedicated one of the tunes in this album to the movie star: Delon's Blues. Alain Delon featured in the film "Joy House", and two Lalo Schifrin tunes from the film are also featured on this LP, the hit recording of The Cat, and Theme from Joy House."
